Abstract

Phosphosulphurized polyolefins, e.g. polyisobutene, are neutralized by treating them with an alkyl phenol or alkyl phenol sulphide in a mineral or synthetic oil diluent, adding an excess of metal base over that required for neutralization, and then treating the mixture with carbon dioxide to neutralize the excess metal base.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition contains as additives (a) an oil-soluble composition obtained by incorporating into an oil a neutralized phosphosulphurized polyolefin, said neutralization being carried out by either (1) reacting the phosphosulphurized polyolefin with an alkyl phenol or alkyl phenol sulphide, reacting the mixture with an excess of a base over that required for neutralization and contacting the resulting solution with CO2 to neutralize the excess base; or (2) by the addition of a high-alkalinity, oil-soluble metal phenate; and (b) an oil-soluble sulphonate of a polyvalent metal. The metal of both additives (a) and (b) is preferably an alkaline earth metal. The sulphonate may be of one of several types including petroleum sulphonates. The base-oil of the composition may be mineral or synthetic but only the former is exemplified, and may contain as V.I. improvers copolymers prepared from vinyl acetate and maleic and fumaric acid esters. In an example a vinylacetate/alkyl fumarate/maleic anhydride copolymer is used. The composition may be a concentrate containing 25-40% of component (a) and 10-25% of component (b), or a diluted composition for direct use as a lubricant containing 0.2-4.1% of (a) and 0.1-1.8% of (b). Components (a) and (b) may both be marketed separately as oil concentrates.
