Abstract

<PICT:0958413/C3/1> <PICT:0958413/C3/2> <PICT:0958413/C3/3> An anode structure for the production of chlorine by electrolysis of brine, e.g. in a mercury cathode cell, comprises an operative surface of a Pt group metal upon mesh of titanium or titanium alloy suspended from a pillar, the end of the pillar adjacent the mesh being spaced from the mesh so that chlorine liberated by electrolysis in the vicinity of the pillar end is not trapped but can pass through the mesh and make its way past the pillar. By Pt group metals is meant Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt. The term mesh includes gauzes, punched or slotted metal sheet and expanded metal. The pillar may be a solid shaft or a tube. Figs. 1 and 2 show an anode structure comprising a Ti mesh 10 coated on its lower side with a Pt group metal. A supporting pillar comprising a Ti tube 20 and cup 18 is connected in spaced relation to the mesh by means of a Ti plate 15 and mesh stiffeners 13, Cl2 passing through the mesh beneath the pillar escaping through openings 17 in a plate 15. A Cu bus-bar (not shown) is located within the tubes. In a further embodiment, Cl2 escape openings are formed in stiffeners instead of in a pillar supporting plate or block. Fig. 7 shows an embodiment where the stiffeners 21 do not completely surround a space beneath the pillar. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 877,901, 885,817 and 911,425.
