958,138. Friction clutches. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. July 23, 1962 [April 21, 1961], No. 14596/61. Heading F2C. [Also in Division G1] A spring-released temperature-responsive friction clutch between a freely mounted internal combustion engine cooling fan 24 and its driving pulley 15, fast with a shaft 12, is controlled by a flexible diaphragm 40 of a wax-filled casing 39 located at the end of the shaft 12 in the engine coolant radiator airstream and is engaged when increasing temperature melts and expands the wax 45 forcing the diaphragm 40 to thrust axially through a channel section plate 35 and spring washer 37, a presser plate 36 which clamps the fan 24 against the pulley 15. The plate 35 is slidably keyed on axial pins 48 which link the presser plate 36 to a plate 34 slidably keyed on a hub 38 fast with the shaft 12, the clutch being disengaged by a spring washer 46 reacting on the plate 34 to retract the presser plate 36. The diaphragm 40 is of Nitryl rubber reinforced with nylon fabric and is secured between a plate 41 and casing 39 peened on the hub 38.
