In a rifle or like firearm having a pivoted hammer 1, Fig. 1, the trigger mechanism comprises a trigger 4 pivoted on a fixed pin 5 and having an arm 8 urged by a spring 6 against a receiver abutment 7, a lever 12 also being pivoted by means of an elongated aperture 11 on the pin 5 to permit translatory motion of the lever, one end of the lever 12 co-operating with a bent 25 on the hammer 1 and the other end 17 having a spring-urged projection 18 adapted to engage a projection 28 on the trigger arm 8 or the other end 17 of the lever (without the projection 18) being adapted to engage a U- shaped spring 30, Fig. 5, mounted for movement on the trigger arm 8. A spring-urged pin 13 located in the arm 8 bears against the lever 12 tending to move it longitudinally relative to the pin 5 and to pivot the lever in a clockwise direction. On pulling the trigger, the arm 8 moves the lever end 17 upwardly to disengage the other end of the lever from the hammer bent 25, and the hammer 1 now released strikes the firing pin 26. A part 27, Fig. 3, of the breech mechanism then moves rearwardly to swing the hammer 1 to the position shown and the pin 13 moves the lever 12 to a position in which one end can engage the hammer bent 25 and the spring-urged projection 18 is in front of the trigger arm projection 28. On forward movement of the breech part 27, the lever engages the hammer bent 25 and under the action of the hammer spring 21 the lever 12 is moved rearwardly so that the spring-loaded stud 18 is depressed by engagement with the projection 28, and since the lever 12 now contacts the front side of the pin 5, the projection 28 is only loaded by the slight pressure of the spring 19 of the stud 18. On releasing the trigger the position shown in Fig. 1 is resumed.
