Abstract
Cellulose and cellulose-containing fabrics are impregnated with a textile treating solution comprising a polyepoxide stretched, dried in a stretched condition and heated to cure the polyepoxide, to render them shrink and crease resistant while permanently maintaining a substantial proportion of the strength of the untreated fabrics. Suitable polyepoxides are polyepoxy-substituted hydrocarbons, e.g. 2, 3, 5, 6 diepoxyoctane and 2, 2 bis(epoxycyclohexyl) propane, ethers of poly epoxy-substitute alkanols and cycloalkanols, e.g. bis(2, 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether, glycidyl ether of 2, 3 epoxy cyclohexanol, epoxybutyl ether of 2, 3-epoxy-cyclohexanol, 1, 4 bis(2, 3 epoxypropoxy) benzene, 1, 3 bis (2, 3 epoxypropoxy) benzene 1, 4-bis(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) butane, 1, 4 bis(2, 3 epoxypropoxy) cyclohexane, diglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, bis(2, 3 epoxy-2-methylpropyl) ether, ethylene glycol bis (2, 3 epoxy-2-methylpropyl ether and diethylene glycol bis(2, 3 epoxy-2-methylpropyl) ether, polyepoxidized esters of unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and alcohols, e.g. 2, 3-epoxycylohexyl 2, 3-epoxypropionate, polyepoxidized esters of unsaturated polycarboxylic acids and unsaturated alcohols, polyepoxidized esters of unsaturated polyhydric alcohols and unsaturated acids and polyepoxidized acetals, e.g. 1, 1, 3-tris (2, 3 epoxypropoxy) butane. The treating solution may also contain nitrogenous textile resins, e.g. dimethylol ethylene urea, plasticizers natural resins, textile softening agents, e.g. polyethylene softeners, optical brightening agents, stabilizers and epoxy curing catalysts, e.g. the fluoborates of magnesium, tin, zinc, cadmium and sodium, boran trifluoride etherate, stannic chloride, boric acid, alkane sulphonic acids, aluminium chloride, hydrochloric, phosphoric and oxalicacids, magnesium chloride and sodium zinc and aluminium sulphates. The treating solution preferably contains 1-30% by weight of the polyepoxide and 0.01-10% by weight of catalyst and after impregnation the fabric preferably contains 60-120% of its weight of solution. The fabric may be stretched 1-12% of its dimensions, dried at room temperature or temperatures of 35 DEG -100 DEG C., cured at 120 DEG -200 DEG C. for 30 seconds - 15 minutes and scoured with water containing a detergent at 40 DEG -90 DEG C. Examples describe the treatment of cotton fabrics with 1 epoxyethyl-3, 4-epoxycyclohexane.
