Abstract

956,606. Adjustable seat backs. AIRCRAFT FURNISHING Ltd. Dec. 3, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 31779/61. Heading A4J. [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] In a continuously variable adjustment device for reclining seats comprising a link for coupling the back-rest of a seat to its base portion the link includes mating threaded elements 10, 11 the pitch of the threads of which is such as to allow relative rotation of the elements under the influence of a force exerted along the rotational axis thereof, in order to vary the length of the link and hence the angle of rake of the back-rest, the link being provided with braking means for preventing such relative rotation, the braking means being adapted for manual release for adjustment of the link. The link is connected by a stirrup 1 to the back-rest and comprises a tube 2 slidable in a sleeve 3, a key 4 on the tube 2 engaging a keyway in the sleeve 3 to prevent the tube 2 from rotating in the sleeve. The sleeve is fixed in a torque tube 5 which is connected by a portion 6 to the base of the seat. A lead screw 9 is rotatably mounted within the portion 6 and has a threaded portion 10 in engagement with a threaded insert 11 fixed within the tube 2. A compression spring 8 tends to urge the tube 2 away from the portion 6 to maintain the maximum length of the link. The braking means for the link consists of a brake block 19 movable along the rotational axis of the screw 9 for abutment against a radial surface of a flange 20 on a sleeve 14 threaded to the screw 9. The brake block 19 is normally held in abutment with the flange 20 by means of a torsion spring which tends to screw the brake block into the portion 6. The brake block is arranged for manual release by action against the spring.
