Abstract
956, 587. Testing abrasion resistance. F. C. HARPER, B. L. CLARKE, and G. J. BROWN. April 2, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 8607/61. Heading G1S. Apparatus for testing the abrasion resistance of a test surface (not shown) mounted in a holder 11, comprises a retractable member 19 having an abrading surface 37 e.g. of leather and a separately retractable coaxially member 24 with an abrading surface 38. Shear, torsional, and loading forces are applied to member 19 and shear and load forces to member 24 by hydraulic means. The holder 11 is mounted on tables 56, 58 movable respectively in two perpendicular directions so that the test surface may be moved in discrete steps while the abrading surfaces 37, 38 are retracted, by means of an electric motor operating pinions 72, 78 driving racks 73, 79. Thus the abrading surfaces and forces are applied to the whole of the test surface. The amount of wear is then measured by standard mechanical or radiation methods.
