Abstract

954,276. Measuring tension in sheets. HENRY SIMON Ltd. Jan.17, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 2794/62. Heading G1W. To determine the tension in a sieve a micrometer dial gauge is used to measure the depression of the sieve under a given load, different loads being applied and comparative readings being taken from which the tension can be calculated. As shown Fig. 1 a gauge 9 is rigidly fixed on a rod 8 of a rigid base structure 4, 5 which rests on a frame 1 and cross members 3 of a sieve. The gauge has a sleeve 10 within which a spindle 11, geared to an indicator 12, is slidable. The spindle carries a weight fan 14. In operation a lever arm 15 is used to raise an anvil 13 of the spindle 11 from the surface of the sieve cover 2. A weight 16 is placed on the pan, the lever arm is released and the anvil falls on to the sieve cover and depresses it. The amount of the depression is noted from the indicator 12. The weight 16 is then removed, a different size of weight is substituted and the operation is repeated. By comparison of the two readings the tension of the sieve can be calculated. It is stated that raising of the anvil a distance of about # of an inch above the cover 2 is sufficient. The weight of the weight fan 14 may be used as the first weight loading. Also the spindle may be spring loaded instead of by weights.
