Abstract

956,418. Insulation. DOW CORNING CORPORATION. July 3, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 25469/62. Heading H1A. Electric insulation having a dielectric strength above 225 volts/mil. of insulation thickness is formed by lapping a self-adhering silicone rubber tape, which tapers from its centre to its edges, around a conductor with adhesion of the tape to the conductor provided by a deformable. vulcanizable diorganopolysiloxane paste which fills the interstices between the tape and conductor and is then vulcanized. Examples of suitable siloxane polymers for making the rubber tape are given together with examples of fillers which may be employed with silica rubber for the formation of the tape including titania, zinc oxide, silica fillers &c. The selfadhering silica rubber is formed by addition of specific proportions of alkyl borates to silica rubber stock when the stock is vulcanized. Vulcanizing of the organosilicon rubber may be effected by heating with organic peroxides or by mixing with the polymer combinations of alkylpolysilicates or methylhydrogensiloxane or irradiation from a cobalt 60 source. Various paste compositions and their preparations are described together with the results of tests on the various forms. Specifications 688,602 and 740,573 are referred to.
