Abstract

956,324. Semi-conductor devices. HARCO CHEMICAL Inc. Feb. 13, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 5531/62. Heading H1K. [Also in Division F2] A thermocouple wire 30 for recording the temperature of molten metal is enclosed in a thermal shock-resistant quartz tube 32 and is carried by a ceramic plug 26 drilled for wires 34, 36 and mounted on electrical connector 28 engaged with an electrical connector 18 supported by an annular ceramic plug 16 within a lance 10. The plug 26 is integral with an expendable tube 24 consisting of a metal tube and bonded thereto an outer layer of substantially inorganic fibres embedded in a hardened heatresistant ceramic. The thermocouple is protected from the mechanical impact of breaking through a slag layer by a metal shield 38. In a modification, a completely expendable probe comprises a metal tube coated with an inorganic fibre-cement compound containing a ceramic plug which supports a thermocouple protected from breakage by a metal shield.
