The pressurized-water coolant of a nuclear reactor is circulated through the reactor and a heat excharger by a turbine driven pump. The latter is provided with a single casing for the pump and turbine, has water-lubricated bearings and the shaft scale liable to leakage. The turbine is supplied with steam from a flash chamber which receives part of the reactor coolant water. Condensate from the turbine and waste from the flash chamber are returned to the coolant circuit by a second pump driven by the turbine. The coolant may be heavy or light water and may be used directly in the supercritcal state.
