Abstract

1,133,311. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 23 Aug., 1966 [9 Sept., 1965], No. 38617/65. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor power plant, a fast reactor is cooled by water under thermodynamical supercritical conditions. The coolant passes directly from the reactor vessel to the high pressure turbines. The H.P. turbine exhaust passes first through a reheater mounted in the pressure vessel but outside the core and secondly from the reheater into an I.P. turbine. Within the pressure vessel, the coolant passes vertically upwards through the core and divides into two separate flows. The first passes directly to the turbines and the second passes over the reheater and is pumped over a return path to the reactor base. The coolant pumps are mounted in the vessel walls and are driven by a separate coolant flow. The pump bearings are lubricated by coolant and the reator is brought into operation by a coolant heater in the base of the vessel.
