Abstract

955,913. Couplings. PRECISION GEAR MACHINES & TOOLS Ltd. July 16, 1962, No. 27192/62. Heading F2U. In a ball-spline coupling between a shaft 10 and a member 14 provided with return passages for the balls 42, the member 14 consists of separate inner and outer sleeves 16, 18 with end caps 20 secured together by longitudinal pins 40. The inner surface of sleeve 16 is formed with grooves 22 complementary to the grooves 12 in shaft 10, while its outer surface has grooves 24 complementary to grooves 26 in the inner surface of sleeve 18 for the reception of the securing members 40. In addition, sleeve 18 has grooves 28 which, with curved radial passages 36 in the end caps 20, form the return passages for the balls 42. The inner sleeve 16 is preferably formed from high grade hardened steel, and the outer sleeve 18 of lower grade steel or of sheet metal, Figs. 8-10 (not shown).
