Abstract

Glutamic acid is produced by cultivating a strain of Brevibacterium divaricatum for 20 hours at 30 DEG C. in a seed culture medium composed of glucose (3%), urea (0.5%), potassium phosphate (0.1%), magnesium sulphate heptahydrate (0.05%), bouillon extract (0.2%), wheat bran extract (2%) and water. The seed culture is then used to inoculate a medium having the following composition:-glucose (10%), urea (1%), potassium phosphate (0.1%), magnesium sulphate heptahydrate (0.05%), wheat bran extract (4%), and water adjusted to pH 7.3; this medium is cultivated at 30 DEG C,, urea (0.5%) and ammonium tartrate (1%) bring added thereto at the end of 18, 26, 32, 40 and 48 hours after inoculation. The fermentation is then stopped, the whole fermentation medium is filtered and glutamic acid crystallized from the filtrate at a pH of about 3.2.ALSO:A nutrient feed composition for cattle, swine, sheep, dogs, cats, poultry and other animals, comprises a nutrient feed ration containing between about 0.1% and 25% by weight of fermentation residue from the production of glutamic acid by fermentation utilizing, for example, the organism Brevibacterium divaricatum. The fermentation residue may include the supernatant liquid from crystallized glutamic acid or be in a dry form; a typical dried fermentation residue container 15% glutamic acid, 5% ash, 20% proteins, 40% carbohydrates, 10% non-nitrogenous organic material and 10% moisture. The fermentation residue may be added to rations of alfalfa, maize, hay, grains, silage, dried beet pulp and protein meal. In addition to its nutritional contribution, the fermentation residue increases the palatability and improves the physical condition of the final feed. Suitable feed proportions of the fermentation residue for various animals and a complete feed formulation are disclosed.
