Abstract

954,810. Control of D.C. motors; transmitting mechanical power. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 21, 1962 [Sept. 21, 1961], No. 33876/61. Headings H2H and H2J. A ship propulsion system comprises prime movers 1, 2, driving polyphase alternators 3, 5, and 4, 6, which are associated with seriesconnected rectifiers 7, 8, the alternators being driven at a constant speed. In one arrangement, the current passing through motor armatures 12, 13, 14, is maintained constant by automatically controlling the alternator fields, the speed and direction of rotation of each motor being varied by controlling the current in its associated field winding. Auxiliary generators may be driven in tandem with the main alternators. For certain applications, the rectified current is varied to control the speed and direction of each motor.
