A traction system for a diesel-electric locomotive comprises an alternating current generator driven by the diesel engine, the output of the generator being rectified and supply to the series direct current traction motors. The alternator comprises a plurality of three-phase windings connected to a plurality of semiconductor rectifiers and the traction motors may be arranged in a number of groups. The traction motors may also be associated with a series-parallel switching system.
