Abstract

954,459. Transfers. LETRASET Ltd. March 5, 1963 [March 21, 1962], No. 10862/62. Heading B6C. A dry transfer material comprises a carrier sheet 1 having a polymer surface susceptible to solvent attack, indicia 2 in printing ink on said carrier sheet, said indicia being resistant to said solvent attack, and adhesive 3 covering said indicia and overlapping on to the sheet 1, the adhesive power of the adhesive 3 for the receiving surface being less in the said overlapping areas than in those areas registering with the indicia by reason of a modification of the adhesive in the overlapping areas resultant on solvent action of the surface of the sheet 1 in those areas. In one example, the sheet 1 comprises a transparent or translucent film of basically orientated polystyrene and the indicia 2 is applied by screen printing and includes a cellulose nitrate polymer, a plasticizer and a solvent. The adhesive 3 is pressure sensitive and may comprise an elastomer such as crepe rubber, a tackifying resin, an antioxidant, and a solvent such as a mixture of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons which react with the sheet 1 on drying to produce a coarse matt finish in the overlapping areas as shown. A protective cover sheet comprising a non- migratory and strongly adherent release coating on a vegetable parchment sheet may be applied to the transfer assembly. To effect the transfer pressure is applied manually or mechanically on the sheet lover the required portions of the indicia a localized stretching of the sheet takes place. The solvent which attacks the sheet 1 may be applied before the adhesive. Printing surfaces.-The indicia may be transferred to offset lithographic plates as direct images. The plates may comprise a paper or metal support and the indicia may be applied with a typewriter or drawn with a greasy ink. Stencils.-The indicia may be transferred to a screen printing mesh by a curved &c. bar which frees the indicia without distortion on to the mesh surface. Stencil filler may be applied all over the transfer after the application of the transfer, and the transfer, which acts as a mask, then removed. The indicia may also be transferred directly to motion picture film, being sufficiently adhesive to withstand repeated projection and then enough to remain in focus. Furthermore, the indicia may contain ceramic pigments so that after transfer to glass or ceramic surfaces, the indicia may be fired into the surface. The indicia may also be used as an etch resist or may be a partially polymerized thermosetting resin which hardens fully on heating. In addition, the indicia may contain conductive pigments and the transfer used in printing circuits or resistors. In a further embodiment, aluminium is applied by vacuum techniques to the sheet 1 before the indicia is applied and in use the metal coating is transferred with the indicia.
