Abstract

954,337. Pipe couplings. L. & L. MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 1, 1962, No. 29627/62. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling has a screw thread engaging with a threaded socket 10 having a tapered entrance 14 engaging the tapered surface 30 of a ring 28 held in a recess situated rearwardly of the threads of the coupling. The recess is formed between a hexagonal portion 20 and a flange 26 or (Fig. 6, not shown), between portion 20 and the threads. The ring 28 is placed in the groove and swaged into position so that it is retained in the groove but can freely rotate about the coupling. When the joint is tightened the ring is compressed into sealing position, Fig. 3 (or Fig. 6, not shown), but regains earlier dimensions on releasing the joint.
