An hermetically sealed compressor comprises a compressor unit 3 which is supported within a hermetically sealed capsule 1 solely by at least one rod 10 of resilient material, the axis of the rod over at least part of its length being parallel with the axis of the drive shaft M of the compressor unit. As described the compressor is driven by an electric motor and is of the piston-type. Resilient members 6 are disposed on the capsule 1 to protect the compressor from shocks due to movement during transportation, for example. The rod 10 includes two arms 7, 8 the free ends of which engage with sleeves 11 provided on the compressor unit, the rod being bent at 14 to provide a U-shaped portion which is engaged within a fastening plate 15 welded to the capsule 1. The rod 10 may be of any cross-sectional shape and the cross-sectional area may vary throughout the length of the rod. The drive shaft M may be vertically disposed and the capsule may be spherical, and the join between the capsule body and a cover 2 may be parallel with the drive shaft. The place of attachment of the rod 10 to the capsule may be such that it is at a node with respect to the natural frequency of the rod or the frequencies occurring during normal operation of the compressor. If only slight resilience in the axial direction is required the rod may be bent one or more times sinusoidally.
