Abstract

A fluorocarbon elastomer, e.g. a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride, is secured to a metal by the use of a rubber- or synthetic rubber-phenolic resin adhesive applied to the metal in conjunction with an epoxy resin applied to the fluorocarbon. The rubber used may be natural, GRS, or nitrile rubber. The adhesives are preferably applied in solution in a solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone with or without a proportion of a non-inflammable solvent such as trichloroethylene, and may contain dyestuffs. In an example a solution in methyl ethyl ketone of a composition containing 100 parts of nitrile rubber, 140 parts of phenolformaldehyde resin and 14 parts of hexamine is applied to a metal surface and dried; a second solution, in the same solvent, of an epoxy resin is then applied and the fluorocarbon layer applied when the coating has dried to the tacky stage; the joint is then cured in hot air or steam at 120 DEG C. for 30 minutes. The invention is applicable to the adhesion of fluorocarbon gaskets to metal plates in heat exchangers, for example those forming part of dairy equipment.
