An oil burner comprises an atomizing nozzle 1 discharging into a reaction chamber 3 where partial combustion takes place with air either aspirated by the oil or conveyed by a blower, and an outlet wall 4 having a plurality of apertures 5 at which the mixture from the reaction chamber 3 burns. The flames from the apertures 5 impinge on the wall of the reaction chamber. The burner is heated at starting by an electric heating coil 6; alternatively igniter electrodes 14 may be switched on so that the nozzle operates as an ordinary oil burner, the flame of which impinges on the wall of the reaction chamber. In a modification the outlet wall has outlet slots. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), an atomizing nozzle comprising a central oil bore and an annular air gap discharges into a thick-walled conducting tube projecting into a distribution chamber having a perforated outlet wall in which the burning takes place to provide infra-red radiation. Part of the heat is radiated back to the thick-walled tube. A fine mesh grid and edge-on laminations are mounted outside the outlet wall. Reflectors or windows may be provided to direct heat from the outlet wall on to the part of the thick-walled tube outside the distribution chamber.
