Abstract

952, 645. Levels. LLOYD'S PACKING WAREHOUSES (HOLDINGS) Ltd. July 9, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 13096/61. Heading G1F. [Also in Division B8] A platform, deck, or other structure which is raised and lowered by hydraulic rams acting at its corners, e.g. the aircraft loading platform described in Specification 920,101, is kept level as it rises and falls by attitude responsive switches, located one at each corner which control the flow of hydraulic fluid to and from the rams. Rams 1a-1d are supplied with pressure fluid through a conduit 7 and valves 4a-4d and exhausted through valves 6a-6d and a conduit 8. Mercury switches 18 are located one at each corner and interconnected by a conduit 19 so that the level of mercury within each switch is proportional to its height with respect to the others. When the platform is level the parts are as shown and contact is made between contacts 20, 21 in each switch. When a change-over switch 15 is in position 15a solenoids 14 of the supply valves 4a-4d are energized to open the valves and cause the platform to rise. If one corner rises more quickly than the others the mercury level in the associated switch will fall away from the contact 21 thus breaking the circuit to the solenoid 14 and closing the valve 4. The closure may be complete or partial and results in the corner concerned rising more slowly or stopping until the others reach the same level. During lowering, the switch 15 is in position 15b and the solenoids 14 of exhaust valves 6a-6d are open. Also contacts 16 are closed by a relay 17. If one corner moves down lower than the others the mercury in the switch rises until contact 22 comes into the circuit. Thus a positive potential is applied to both ends of the relay 17 which is thereby deenergized and allows contacts 16 to open. This breaks the circuit to the solenoid 14 of the lowering valve 6, which closes. In the event of a hydraulic or mechanical failure which causes the platform to tilt, the mercury in the lowest switch reaches a contact 23 which energizes a "fail-safe" relay 28. This arrests the platform by opening contacts 29 thereby de-energizing all the solenoids 14 and closing all the valves 4, 6.
