Abstract
A thermoplastic composition of high impact strength is made by blending a copolymer of from 90 to 60% by weight of styrene and from 10 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile with a substantially inelastic copolymer of from 80 to 55% by weight of butadiene and from 20 to 45% by weight of acrylonitrile in such an amount that the composition contains from 5 to 45% by weight of said inelastic copolymer. The mixing of the two components can be effected by conventional methods, for instance by masticating the separately produced dry components on a calendar or in a Banburry mixer at a suitable temperature e.g. 150 DEG C.; other ingredients such as fillers, dyestuffs and stabilizers may be incorporated. The components may also be prepared in the form of emulsions and blended as latices, the mixture being dried according to conventional methods. The styrene copolymer may be prepared by suspension or bulk polymerisation. Mixtures of the two components may also be prepared by dissolving one of the copolymers in the monomer of the other component and polymerising the mixture. One of the two components may be first emulsion-polymerised, said emulsion may then be added to an emulsion of the monomer of the other component, and the polymerization may then be continued to completion. The butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer may be prepared in the presence of a mercaptan polymerization modifier and also, if desired, in the presence of a small amount of cross-linking agent e.g. divinyl benzene.
