Apparatus for removing coils 19, which may be of metal rod, from a hook 14 pivotally supported from an endless chain 13 comprises two stakes 33, 34 mounted in a head 32 which is rotatable by a motor (not shown). A pusher mechanism 30 includes an arm 38 which is broad enough to extend across a coil 19, the pusher being movable along a track 36 by an arm 39 connected to an endless chain 41. A rack 47 reciprocable by an hydraulic cylinder 48 drives the endless chain by a chain 45, and similar hydraulically actuated means causes longitudinal movement of a stake 44 mounted on a slidable base 51. Beneath the stake is located a chain conveyer 54. In operation, coils supported by hooks 14 are individually passed on to the uppermost stake 33. When the stake is entirely occupied by coils, the head 32 is driven so that the stake moves to a lower position, the pusher mechanism 30 is actuated and the coils are transferred on to the stake 49. The base 51 then moves along a track 52 and the stake 49 is withdrawn from the coils. The conveyer 54 moves the coils to a storage area or the like.
