Abstract

A calcined pigment comprising 20 to 80% by weight of zinc oxide and 80 to 20% by weight of silica, no zinc silicate being present. The pigment may be in the form of a silica core coated with zinc oxide. The sources of silica are precipitated silicic acid, native silica and quartzite. The pigment may also comprise lead oxide and sulphur trioxide. The pigment is prepared by forming an intimate mixture of the zinc oxide and silica and calcining at 450 DEG to 700 DEG C. In Example 1 a slurry formed by ball milling silica, zinc oxide, water and acetic acid (as catalyst), was filtered, dried and calcined. In Example 2 an aqueous slurry of lead oxide and zinc oxide, which lead oxide and zinc oxide had been blended in the dry state, and acetic acid were added to an aqueous slurry of silica, the slurry heated, sulphuric acid added thereto and then the mixture was stirred, filtered, dried and calcined.ALSO:A calcined pigment comprising 20 to 80% by weight of zinc oxide and 80 to 20% by weight of silica, no zinc silicate being present.
