Abstract

Calcium chloride liquors, obtained by reacting ammonium chloride with hydrated lime, obtained from acetylene production, in the distiltillers of an ammonia-soda process, are freed from sulphite and fluosulphate impurities by heating the hydrated lime before entry into the distillation system to a temperature between 323-400 DEG C. to convert the fluosulphate to sulphides, admitting the lime to the distillation system and adding ferrous sulphate to the distilled to precipitate sulphides as ferrous sulphide. The sulphides are separated from the calcium chloride containing liquor and the liquor subjected to evaporation to obtain calcium chloride. The amount of ferrous sulphate added to the distillers is from 5-20% excess over that stoichiometrically equivalent to the total sulphide present in the hydrated lime after heating. Specification 945,960 is referred to.
