Abstract

A unitary assembly comprising the electrical and magnetic parts of an electromagnetic contactor is housed within a two-part casing comprising a part of box-like form with one open side and a part which is readily detachable from the first part and covers the open side to retain the unitary assembly within the casing. As shown in Fig. 1, a support 3 for the core 1 has a " half bearing " 4 secured thereon by projections 4a, 4b. The armature 5 has a semicylindrical projection 5a engaging in a corresponding recess in the bearing 4 between lateral abutments 4a. The armature also has a finger 5b with a rounded end engaged by the hooked end 6a of a tie 6 attached to one end of a tension spring 7 having'its other end secured to the support 3. The spring 7 urges the armature 5 against the bearing 4 and also biases the armature towards a stop 8, with a force which decreases as the armature approaches the core 1 on energization of the coil 2 (Figs. 2a, 2b, not shown). The spring 7 may be replaced by a compression spring in a tubular guide (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). In Fig. 6 the contactor parts are mounted on an insulating support 58 with fixed contacts 63, each engaged under two studs 58b and held by a spring 64. A base 51 is provided with internal projections 51b having slots 51c and bevelled surfaces 51d which locate the support 3 in the base. Contact terminals 54 on the base 51 cooperate with the ends of the contacts 63 and are biased by springs 55. Moving contact bridges 68 are locked in position in a bar 66 coupled to the armature 5 and biased by a contact pressure spring 69. A cover 53 provided with " quenching " compartments fits over the contacts and is secured by screws 70 to hold the contactor within the housing 51, 53. The side of the base 51 may be slotted at 73 (Fig. 9) to receive lugs of auxiliary contact assemblies 71 which have operating push-members 74 positioned so as to be actuated by a T-shaped lever 75 which moves with the movable contacts.
