Abstract
Alkaline earth metals are prepared electrolytically in solid compact form using a molten mixture of salts consisting of the chloride of the desired metal Ca, Ba, Sr, and at least two salts selected from chlorides of Ba, Ca, Sr, Na, K, Li, Rb and Cs, and the fluorides of Ca, Sr, Ba, whereby electrolysis proceeds at a temperature of 600-700 DEG C. Preferably a rotating cathode of stainless steel with a doctor blade is used as described in Specification 951,253, but cathodes of Mg, Al, Cu, Au may be used to form an alloy with the deposited alkaline earth metal. The salt mixture is preferably pre-treated with HCl gas or chlorine to remove moisture and oxygen, a current at 2-3 V. may be passed in a pre-electrolysis refining stage. For example, a mixture of 60 g. mols of CaCl2, 20 of SaCl2, and 20 of BaCl2, is pre-treated with dry HCl gas, and a small amount of alumina is added to improve stability of electrolysis which is effected at 5.3 V. and 676 DEG C. Calcium of 96% purity is deposited on the cathode rotating at 50 revs. per minute.
