Abstract

724,198. Electrolytic preparation of titanium. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 3, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1951], No. 27519/51. Class 41. A process for the manufacture of titanium comprises electrolysing a titanium compound dissolved or suspended in a fused salt in the presence of molten zinc, cadmium or lead or mixtures of two or all of these metals in which the titanium is soluble at the temperature of electrolysis, withdrawing the alloy of titanium and the molten metal or metals so formed during the electrolysis and recovering the titanium therefrom. The titanium compound may be a titanium halide, or an alkali or alkaline earth metal titanate, or pure titanium dioxide, or a natural rutile with a titanium oxide content of over 98 per cent. The fused salt may be an alkaline earth metal halide, such as calcium chloride, or a mixture of these halides, or an alkali metal fluotitanate. The preferred melt is one in which the titanium compound is soluble. The molten metal is preferably made the cathode. Electrolysis is continued until the concentration of titanium in the alloy has a value of 2-3 per cent, when the alloy is tapped off. The titanium may be recovered by distilling in vacuo to leave a titanium residue, or the alloy may be cooled to precipitate titanium as metal or as a complex, which is separated by filtration and may then be distilled in vacuo to recover the titanium. Specification 697,487, [Group II], is referred to.
