Abstract

951,032. Continuous casting - processes. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. Aug. 24, 1962 [Aug. 25, 1961], No. 32671/62. Heading B3F. In the continuous casting of plates and strips from non-ferrous metals, the cooling of the casting is so controlled that the central part of the solidification front projects in the opposite direction to the direction of casting withdrawal. The mould 8, Fig. 2, may be so shaped that coolant may be applied to a large area of the sides of the casting, while the ends of the mould may be insulated by asbestos plates. Alternatively, the ends of the mould may be heated or it may be constructed of materials of different heat conductivity, e.g. ends of graphite, sides of copper. A casting wheel, Fig. 5, may be made of three rings 13-15, the middle ring 13 of copper or aluminium and the outer rings 14, 15 of steel.
