[Also in Division C7] A zinc-aluminium alloy is rapidly solidified such that the volume of metal to be quenched is 5 to 25 mm.<SP>3</SP> (preferably 8 to 15 mm.<SP>3</SP>) per mm.<SP>2</SP> of the cooling surface of the mould, or in the case of a continuous casting, per mm.<SP>2</SP> of the cooling surface of the casting. In the examples, 4 cm. thick ingots were solidified after 2 seconds using a mould at room temperature and after 10 seconds using a mould at 220‹ C.
