Abstract

949,970. Crates. W. T. BUSS, and SIMPSON Ltd. Jan. 4, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16131/60. Heading B8P. A crate comprising a wooden box having a base and sides provided with ventilating channels, which give access of air from the underside of the base through the contents of the box when standing on the ground or when stacked. The box, made from spruce or suitable plywood, has four sides 4, a bottom panel 1 and fillets 6 and may be assembled using water-proof glue, nails 12, or screws with or without metal straps 10 or angles 8 and 9. Spacer blocks 2, fixed to the underside of the bottom panel 1, in conjunction with skids 3, provide ventilating channels 5. The ventilation of the interior of the box is afforded by the vent slots 11 formed in the bottom and sides, as shown in Fig. 1. The vent edges 11a and 116 may be upwardly inclined. The vents also provide hand holds for the handling of the container. Centre flow vents 13 surmounted by a cowl 14 and located by plate 15 may be provided. Additional ventilating channels may include vents in the sides of the box or an inner spaced jacket with vents for passage of air or gas. The corner fillets 6 may project above the side to facilitate stacking and may terminate in rails extending along the top edges of side walls. Vertical stacking may be bottom side down or alternatively bottom side down/bottom side up. Lifting facilities are provided by the ventilation channels 5, but top edge lifting may be afforded by metal straps extending under the base and up the sides terminating in eye-hooks. The box may be manufactured to be either of the rigid or collapsible type and the box panels may be nested in the space between the skids 3. The box may be provided with a lid 18 with vents 19 and a hinged gate 20 for the discharge of contents. The wood may be treated with a wood preservative.
