Abstract

949,330. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 17, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 17960/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A target for use in a television camera tube comprises a composite storage membrane supported solely at its periphery and having a thickness of between 500 and 1000 A, and consisting of a first layer of a homogeneous polycrystalline semi - conducting oxide having straight-through electron conductivity and high lateral resistance and a second layer of a material having high lateral resistance fused to the first layer. The first layer is preferably of magnesium oxide and the second layer is of aluminium oxide or a noble metal sub-divided into a myriad of discrete islets and constituting 0.5 to 10% of the overall thickness of the membrane which may be 750 A. The target may be manufactured by forming a vaporizable film of nitrocellulose across an annular support, evaporating a layer of aluminium or a noble metal such as gold on to this film and coating this layer with magnesium. Subsequent heating of the target in an oxidizing atmosphere vaporizes the nitrocellulose film, oxidizes the magnesium and either oxidizes the aluminium or coagulates the noble metal. The presence of the second layer causes the membrane to be extremely taut and the magnesium oxide to be fine grained. Also the second layer has a lower secondary sensitivity which is desirable for the electron gun side of the target.
