Abstract

The preparation of bones or pieces of bone from humans, pigs or calves to serve as readily-acceptable bone grafts for humans entails soaking the bone in water to remove blood, colouring matter and water-soluble substances, refluxing with a solvent such as acetone or carbon tetrachloride to remove fat, modifying the collagen with boiling aqueous 40% urea solution, washing out urea, and then treating with ethylene oxide to form addition compounds of residual protein and so block antigens.
