Abstract
948,677. Forging presses. B. & S. MASSEY & SONS Ltd., J. FOSTER, and P. BALL. Nov. 12, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39041/61. Heading B3H. In a multi-stage forging press the metal blanks are transferred between dies 14 by pairs of gripping fingers 53, Fig. 5. Three hot forging and one final trimming operation are performed on a flat blank cut from metal bar and the blank is turned through 90 degrees during transfer between the first two stages. The transfer fingers project inwardly from two parallel hollow box-section frames 16, Fig. 3, pivoted at their ends to side members 31 which are mounted on one of the arms 34 of bellcrank levers rocking about shafts 32. The other arms 33 are connected by links 36 to a lever 35 actuated by an eccentric shaft 38. Rotation of the latter causes raising and lowering of the frames 16 and simultaneously they are moved longitudinally by a cam 30 on a shaft 40, engaging a follower 43 connected to one of the arms and biased by a pneumatic piston 92. Both shafts 38, 40 are chain-driven from the eccentric shaft 30 of the press. The frames 16 are also moved towards and away from each other, for closing upon a workpiece, by hydraulic cylinders 45, Fig. 3, supplied by a cam-driven pump operated from the eccentric shaft 30 of the press. Each pair of fingers, Fig. 5, comprises a lower non-pivotal finger detachably mounted on spigot 52, and an upper finger 53 detachably mounted on a spigot 61 pivoted at 72 and connected to a push-rod 70 loaded by a spring 73 which biases the fingers to closed position. They are opened by a cam 84 on cam-shaft 20. Each of the latter is driven through universal couplings 21, 24 and a splined-rod 22, Fig. 3, from gear-boxes 26 whose input shafts 27 are chain-driven from the eccentric shaft 30 of the press. Both gear-boxes are adjustable towards and away from each other by a lead screw operated by hand wheel 49, to suit different sizes of dies. The fingers used for turning the workpiece during transfer are mounted within a sleeve 67, Fig. 5, supported in bearings 68 within frame 16. The sleeve is coupled by a link to the fixed press bolster 11 whereby it is rotated automatically during longitudinal transfer movement of the frames. Other fingers are described, Fig. 4 (not shown), which transfer the workpiece without turning it. Low-pressure air is supplied to the interior of the hollow frames 16 for cooling and to prevent entry of scale. Heatdeflector plates are also interposed between the frames and the dies. The starting blanks are supplied to the first die by a conveyer or along a shoot.
