Abstract

947,700. Sterilisation by sonic energy. BENDIX CORPORATION. April 9, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 13629/62. Heading A5G. [Also in Division A4] Articles contaminated with bacteria are cleaned and sterilised by completely immersing said articles in a cleaning solution comprising a wetting agent and water, cavitating said solution by the application of sonic energy e.g. at a frequency of 50 kc/s. or less, draining said solution and subjecting said articles to a bactericidal gas. The articles may be rinsed with water prior to the action of the bactericidal gas e.g. ethylene oxide or beta-propiolactone. Specified wetting agents are mixtures of sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium hexametaphosphate; sodium orthosilicate and trisodium phosphate; sodium meta silicate, sodium bicarbonate, tetrasodium phosphate and sodium lauryl sulphate; and sodium lauryl sulphate and ammonium hydroxide. The invention also relates to an apparatus for cleaning and sterilising articles comprising a vessel 10 with means for supplying and withdrawing liquid from said vessel at port 10 and valve 68, with a separate means 31 for supplying gas to said vessel, with a plurality of sonic or ultrasonic transducers 48 and 49, fixed to transducer plate 21 disposed in opening 20 sealed by means 24, attached in wave transmitting relation with said vessel and with means for spraying water 42 in said vessel. Specified articles treated are medical and dental instruments. Specification 947,699 is referred to.
