Abstract
946,628. Electromagnetic relays; electrically released switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 8, 1961 [Dec. 9, 1960; June 16, 1961], No. 44053/61. Addition to 907,519. Heading H2B. The sealed magnetic contact device of the parent Specification is provided with a block of ferrite material which mechanically interconnects the extensions of the contact bars to provide magnetic biasing of the contacts. As shown in Fig. 1, a contact device, as described in the parent Specification and 928,145 has a polarizing, electrically insulating ferrite magnet 4 between its parallel contact members 2, 3, and the contacts may be retained in the closed position thereby after operation due to a current pulse in the winding 5. The magnet 4 and winding 5 may be common to a plurality of contact devices 1 (Fig. 2, not shown). The magnet 4 may have a surrounding winding which can be pulsed to reverse or reduce its magnetization (Fig. 3, not shown), or the magnet 4 (Fig. 4), may be a diametrically polarized annular magnet engaging the outer faces of the members 2, 3 and rotatable to adjust the biasing flux between a maximum (magnetic axis aligned with contact members) and zero (magnetic axis perpendicular to contact members) (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown).
