Abstract

Coated soap tablets are produced by dipping the tablets into an aqueous solution containing (a) a compound which forms on the tablets a lustrous, transparent, non-hygroscopic, water-soluble coating, and (b) a water-soluble aryl sulphonate selected from a benzene sulphonate substituted with two alkyl groups, one having 0-3 and the other 0-1 carbon atoms, a naphthalene sulphonate substituted with 0-3 methyl groups, and an anthracene sulphonate substituted with 0-3 methyl groups. (a) is suitably polyvinyl alcohol or a water-soluble polyacrylate, while (b) is preferably sodium xylene or p-toluene sulphonate or potassium trimethylnaphthalene or dimethylanthracene sulphonate. A thinning agent, e.g. ethanol or diethylene or hexylene glycol is generally also present in the dipping solution, as is a polyethylene glycol (M.W. 200) which assists in the dissolution of the film when the tablet is used.
