A rotary drum drier comprises a horizontally-disposed jacketed drum having an inner, horizontal shaft on which helical agitator or mixing blades are carried by support arms, and additional blade surfaces are carried by the agitator or mixing blades which surfaces are shaped to cause material within the drum to fall along the angle of repose of the material to be treated in a direction having a horizontal component opposite to that of the agitator or mixing blade to which the additional blade surface is attached. A rotary drum drier comprises a jacketed shell 1 having a hinged door 2, openings 3, 4 for charging and connection to a dust filter respectively and a discharge 5. A shaft 7 mounted in a gland 6 in the end wall and radial arms 8, 9 are cored for the circulation of a heating medium, the arms supporting and rotating helical blades 10, 11 carrying additional blade surfaces 14 and 12, 13 respectively. The blade surface 14 is of scoop-shape and positioned to direct material to the region of the outlet 5 in the path of travel of the surface 12 which sweeps it into the outlet. The other surface 13 on the blade 11 assists in the general direction of flow of the material in the drier, which general direction is created by the blades 10, 11 moving the material in opposite directions, i.e. the material is moved horizontally in one direction near the periphery of the shell by the blade 10 and in the opposite direction near the horizontal axis of the shell by the blade 11.
