Abstract

The invention comprises 3-methoxy -17a -methoxymethyl or -17a - ethoxyethyl-estra- 1,3,5 (10)-trien -17b - ol, 3b - acetoxy-17a -methoxymethyl - androst -5- en - 17b - ol, 3a - acetoxy-20#x-hydroxy -20#x-methoxymethyl -5b - pregnan -11- one and processes for the preparation thereof in which a corresponding 17- or 20-keto steroid, namely 3-methoxy-estra- 1,3,5(10)-trien-17-one, 3b - acetoxy - androst -5- en -17- one or 3a -acetoxy - pregnane -11,20- dione is reacted with an appropriate methoxymethyl or ethoxy methyl magnesium halide to yield the corresponding 17b - hydroxy -17a - methoxymethyl or -17a - ethoxymethyl or 20-hydroxy -20#x-methoxymethyl steroid. Subsequently the products may be treated with a dehydrating agent e.g. oxalic acid or phosphoryl chloride to obtain the corresponding 17- or 20-formyl substituted derivative.
