Abstract

The invention comprises 3b -acetoxy-17b -cyano-17a - (21-tetrahydropyranyloxy) - androst-5-ene and 3-ethylenedioxy-17b -cyano-17a -(21-tetrahydropyranyloxy) -androst-5-ene and a process for the preparation of pregn-5-ene-3b , 17a -diol-20-one and pregn-4-en-17a -ol-3, 20-dione by reacting respectively 3b -acetoxy-17-cyano-androst-5-en-17-ol and 3-ethylenedioxy-17-cyano-androst-5-en-17-ol with 2,3-dihydropyran in the presence of catalytic amounts of phosphorus oxychloride or p-toluenesulphonic acid, treating the resulting tetrahydropyranyloxy ethers referred to above with methyl magnesium bromide or iodide, and decomposing with sulphuric or acetic acid the resulting 20-ketimines and at the same time the ethylenedioxy group when present. Detailed examples are given.
