Abstract

944,636. Extruding. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Dec. 27, 1961, No. 46284/61. Heading B3P. Apparatus for extruding a metal billet B into a product E having one cross-sectional dimension at least equal to the largest even-sectional dimension of the billet, comprises an attachment member 33 removably positioned between the billet container 1 and die 19 and having an aperture 39 whose cross-section adjacent the die is greater than the die aperture, thereby providing an abrupt shoulder 20, to ensure complete fining of the die aperture. The billet may be of aluminium or aluminium alloy; it is extruded by a ram 7 with a dummy block 9. Attachment 33 is secured to container 1 by ring 41 and has an inner ring 35 whose aperture merges from a circular section at 39<SP>1</SP> to an oval section adjacent the die. The latter is mounted against a backing piece 25 in a holder 17 mounted against a bolster 27 in a U-shaped tool-holder 11. This is supported by an hydraulically-actuated lock 29 against the press bed 31. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the aperture in the attachment member 33 is provided by separate inserts surrounded by a shrunk-on ring.
