Abstract
944,631. Fluid pressure apparatus. NORTH HANTS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961], No. 38743/61. Heading FIP. An actuator comprises two rams 11, 14, Fig. 1, of different area movable in a common hydraulic cylinder 11, a double-acting pneumatic piston and cylinder the piston 4 of which is connected to operate the smaller of the rams in the hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic reservoir 18, and a passage 22 between the reservoir and hydraulic cylinder controlled by a valve 24 which, during each return stroke of the actuator, is opened by means 28 responsive to air pressure in that end of the pneumatic cylinder to which compressed air is admitted for the return stroke. The smaller ram 11 is connected to the rod 10 of the pneumatic piston 4 and extends through the larger ram 14 with a clearance 34 through which fluid can flow. The reservoir 18 is connected to the lower end of the hydraulic cylinder by a passage 20 and to the upper end by the passage 22 which is normally closed by the spring-pressed valve 24. When compressed air is supplied through a passage 6 to the upper end of the pneumatic cylinder, the piston 4 moves the ram 11 downwardly to pressurise hydraulic fluid in the upper part of the hydraulic cylinder so that the larger ram 14 moves downwardly at a low speed. The rams are returned to their upper positions by compressed air supplied to the lower end of the pneumatic cylinder through a passage 8, the pressure in the cylinder acting on a piston 28 to open the valve 24 to enable the hydraulic fluid above the ram 14 to pass to the reservoir as the ram is raised by a flange 36 on the smaller ram 11. In an alternative embodiment in which the movement of the larger ram is effected in two stages, a seal 52, Fig. 2, is provided between the concentric surfaces of the rams 11 and 14, and two passages 54, 57 connect the interior of the larger ram 14 with the hydraulic cylinder. The passage 54 is controlled by a spring-loaded valve 56, and the passage 57 is controlled by a relatively heavily spring-loaded valve 58. During the first part of the forward stroke of the actuator, the pressure within the larger ram is above atmospheric pressure and the downward movement of the larger ram draws fluid from the reservoir through the valve 24. When the larger ram encounters resistance, the pressure within the ram opens' the valve 58 to enable pressure to act in the cylinder 11 on the whole area of the larger ram, the pressure also closing the valve 24. On the first part of the return stroke, the valve 24 is opened by the pressure in the lower part of the pneumatic cylinder and the valve 56 opens so that, during upward movement of the smaller ram, the larger ram remaining stationary, fluid can flow into the larger ram. The return stroke is completed by the flange 36 engaging the valve 58 to raise the large ram, hydraulic fluid passing to the reservoir through the valve 24. The upward movement of the piston 4 is damped by a boss 42 and throttle 46.
