Abstract

944,198. Magnetic storage apparatus. AMP Inc. Oct. 30, 1962 [Nov. 13, 1961], No. 40917/62. Heading H3B. A shifting register comprising an assembly of multi-apertured storage cores and windings as described in Specification 899,366 is formed by adhering the cores 9, Fig. 2, to a non-magnetic insulating tape 1, threading electrical conductors through the core apertures 10, 11 by means of a needle so as to form windings 17 and also secure the cores to the tape, and covering the cores with an auxiliary tape (not shown) which adheres to the tape 1. The tape 1 is formed with sprocket holes 5 which are engaged by sprockets 3, Fig. 1, when the tape is passed from a storage spool 2 to an intermittently driven spool 4 during assembly. As the tape proceeds between the two spools it is first coated with a rubber or epoxy resin adhesive by a roller 7. Cores are then deposited at spaced intervals on the tape by a distributer 8. Subsequently probes are passed through each core in turn by a testing device 12 which applies switching currents to reverse and restore the core magnetisation. Output pulses are induced in one of the probes which are compared with a reference value. If a core fails to comply with the test specification it is removed by a deflecting blade 14 and replaced by a pre-tested core from a supply device 15. Wiring is carried out manually when the tape reaches a location 16, and subsequently the auxiliary tape 19 carried by a spool 18 is applied by a roller 20 to the tape 1 and the cores. Several, e.g. twenty, rows of cores may be deposited on a single insulating tape. The completed tape and core assembly may be wrapped around an H-shaped support 22, Fig. 3, having electrical terminals 23 to which the windings are connected. Alternatively, with a tape 24, Fig. 4, made of glass cloth and cores assembled in rows, the tape may be treated subsequent to assembly with a thin coating of epoxy or phenolic resin and moulded to a desired support shape as shown before the resin sets. The tape material may be of polyethylene, terephthalate resin, acetate or glass cloth and may have pre-punched winding apertures (not shown). The completed assembly may be potted with a synthetic resin.
