Abstract

917,287. Winding toroidal cores. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 5131/60. Class 83 (4). A method of winding wire around a toroidal core includes the steps of forming an endless loop of flexible material passing through the core, attaching one end of a wire to a point on said loop and moving said loop so that said point travels in a closed path through the core causing the wire to be looped around the core. Wire 26 to be wound on a toroidal core 24 held in a clamp 22 is secured at 27 to an endless flexible member 15 running over grooves 21 in adjustable guide members 11, 12 rotated by a motor 16 driving belts 17, 19. The wire 26 and one run 15a of the loop 15 pass through the core 24 so that the wire 26 is looped around the core sliding off the conical surfaces of the guides 11, 12. Before winding, the wire 26 is pulled off a reel 28 which is then held stationary during winding by a pawl 32. The flexible member 15 may itself be formed from the wire 26, its end being soldered at 27. A spring-urged or rubber roller 49, Fig. 10, may bear on the wire 26 as it passes over the guides 11 and 12. To wind wire between apertures 38, 39 of a multi-apertured core 40, Fig. 8, the loop 15 is deflected by guides 41, 42 so that one run 15b passes through the aperture 39, the other run 15a passing through the aperture 38.
