A conical member 23, Fig. 4, has a yarn guiding groove 28 that is continuous where it guides the yarn from the small end to the large end of the conical member, and which is interrupted or reduced in depth where crossing points 29 occur as the groove guides the yarn from the large end to the small end of the conical member. Fig. 5 is a section showing a crossing point 29 of the groove 28,the section being taken along the longitudinal axis of the interrupted portion of the groove and across the continuous portion of the groove, and, as shown, the interrupted portion becomes progressively shallower as it approaches the crossing point where it is entirely interrupted. Alternatively, Fig. 6, the depth of the so-called interrupted portion of the groove 28 is made shallow for a short distance at each side of the crossing point 29. The groove 28 may be flared in crosssection adjacent to the surface of the conical member 23 either throughout its length or adjacent to the larger end of the conical member. Fig. 1 shows the conical member 23 incorporated in a yarn winding machine such that as the yarn is traversed on to a conical member 30, and subsequently on to a spindle 15, the resulting and progressive build up of the yarn package 37 causes a carriage 20 to slide along guide means until a finger 36 on the carriage actuates a switch 40 on the machine to stop the drive to the spindle 15. The carriage 20 is biased against movement by spring means or by a weight acting on a cord 32. The carriage 20 carries a yarn supply package 25. An adjustable yarn guide 34, on the carriage 20, prevents the yarn from running off the smaller end of the grooved conical member 23.
