Abstract

942,622. Making axle casings; welding by fusion. KIRKSTALL FORGE ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 18, 1962 [Nov. 10, 1961], No. 40379/61. Headings B3A and B3R. An axle casing for a motor road vehicle is made by prefabricating an axle centre 10, Fig. 1, and a pair of tubular arms 12, holding these parts in assembled alignment, and welding them together by depositing weld metal in adjoining circumferential grooves in the ends of the axle centre 10 and the arms 12. The parts 10, 12 are rotatably mounted in a jig 11 by a motor 14 under a submerged arc welding head 15 whilst held together by bolts 13. The arms 12 and axle centre 10 are formed with spigots 17, Fig. 2, and sockets 18 at the joints to be welded. Brake attachment flanges 19 and spring seats and attachment ears 20, 21 are formed integral with the arms 12, or are welded thereto. The axle centre 10 is a cast or forged bowl or may be fabricated from plate. The arms 12 are forged solid and then trepanned, forged partially hollow and then bored, or are completely pierced during forging. In a modification, Fig. 3, the welded joints 16 are backed by a metal sleeve 22.
