Abstract

1462771 Strut-type suspensions ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 18 April 1974 [19 April 1973] 18937/73 Heading B7D In a strut-type suspension comprising a wheel mounting rigidly secured to a telescopic hydraulic damper, the outer tube 36, Fig. 4, of damper is an interference fit in a boss 34 on the wheel mounting 30, and apertures 38 in the boss 34 are filled by welds 40 to unite the boss and tube. The interference fit is produced either by pressing the tube 36 into the boss 34 or by deforming the boss around the tube. Instead of the welds 40 a fillet weld may be formed around the lower margin of the boss. In Fig. 7 a single fillet weld 60 secures the damper tube 50 to the wheel mounting 52, and an end cup 62 to the tube 50. Further welding may be performed to provide additional security, or the tube may have a shoulder 64 up to which the tube is pressed into the wheel mounting.
