Abstract

The invention relates to compounds of a general formula <FORM:0941709/C2/1> wherein X1 and X2 each represent a hydrogen atom, or a nitro group, at least one of the symbols X represents a nitro group, Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R represents an alkyl radical having 3-8 carbon atoms, an alkenyl radical having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms, a chloro-substituted methyl or ethyl radical, an aralkyl or cycloalkyl radical. Preferably R represents an alkyl or alkenyl radical having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms e.g. allyl, propyl or isopropyl and both X1 and X2 represent nitrogroups. The compounds may be prepared by reacting phosgene with a compound of the formula R-OH to form a compound of the formula RO-CO-C1, and reacting the latter with a phenol of the formula <FORM:0941709/C2/2> In another method phosgene is reacted with a compound of the formula 2 to form a compound of the formula <FORM:0941709/C2/3> which is subsequently reacted with the compound ROH. Examples are given of the preparation of hexyl (2:4-dinitro-6-methyl phenyl) carbonate, beta chloroethyl (2:4-dinitro-6-sec. butyl phenyl) carbonate, allyl (2:4-dinitro-6-methylphenyl) carbonate, and isopropyl (2:4-dinitro-6-chlorophenyl) carbonate. Specified active ingredients are those in which X1 or X2 are nitro, Y is methyl and R is isopropyl, allyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl, 2-chloromethyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl; X1 and X2 are nitro and R is isopropyl and Y is hydrogen, chlorine, and sec.-butyl; X1 and X2 are nitro, Y is sec. butyl and R is 2-chloroethyl; Y and R are hydrogen and isopropyl respectively, and X1 and X2 are nitro and hydrogen, respectively, or hydrogen and nitro, respectively; X1 is nitro, X2 is hydrogen, Y is chlorine and R is isopropyl. Dispersing agents and carriers are specified.
