939,890. Filters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ. N.V. Feb. 19,1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6349/62. Class 46. A process for the dewatering of sludge by filtration comprises treating during filtration the filtration residue settling on the filter medium with steam and/ or hot gas introduced downstream of the filter medium. Each filter frame 1 of a conventional filter press has a circular inlet opening 2 through which the sludge enters filter cells 3 under pressure. Over the filter frames are stretched filter cloths 4 held by screwrings (not shown) around the opening. A conduit system 6 is used for continuously introducing steam during filtration. The filtrate runs off through a a filtrate-collecting system 5 at the bottom of the filter press. Quantitative process examples are given.
